Michigan’s Constitution provides Michigan citizens the opportunity to decide every 16 years whether to call a constitutional convention to propose revisions to the state’s rules for government.
In a debate held earlier this year, John Logie and Robert LaBrant debate Proposal 1, which will appear on the Nov. 2 ballot. The debate is sponsored by the Great Debates 2010 coalition.
MEA recommends you vote NO on Proposal 1, in part because such an endeavor would be costly and time-consuming. Some estimates peg the project at about $45 million over two years!
What’s more, if a convention is held delegates could change laws related to your collective bargaining rights, pension, or even make Michigan a so-called "Right to Work" state.
