Former MEA Board member and local Grand Rapids leader Lupe Ramos-Montigny is running for the State Board of Education Nov. 2.
Ramos-Montigny is a retired teacher from Grand Rapids, who worked as a migrant farm worker along with other family members as a child. She was nominated by the Michigan Democratic Party and is recommended by MEA.
With over 36 years in the classroom, Ramos-Montigny is uniquely positioned to serve on the State Board, which has direct supervisory duties for local school districts and community colleges as well as indirect coordinating duties for four-year state colleges and universities. Terms last eight years.
"We need State Board members that actually have on-the-ground knowledge of what is needed to succeed and a track record to support that," said MEA President Iris K. Salters. "Lupe will be the voice of not only our school employees but most importantly, the students. Lupe is an educator rolling up her sleeves to make a difference for Michigan's students at the State Board level."
MEA members can help elect Ramos-Montigny by voting for her and by supporting her campaign. It costs a lot to run a statewide campaign, which is what Ramos-Montigny must do to win.
